It feels like this book has been waiting in the wings for a little while now. Runes of Lakkara has been at the forefront for some time and I am so excited to finally be able to talk about it in more detail.
My third novel is a big swing away from my usual writing which usually consists of some science fiction element and likely wrapped up in some dark horror setting. But Runes of Lakkara was a story that I realised I had been dying to tell for a long time.
Runes of Lakkara was written almost immediately after I finished writing my sci-fi thriller, Project Vanguard. At the time I was fairly overwhelmed with the darker settings my novels had taken and I was ready to switch to something that was lighter; an adventure inspired by my days playing role playing games with my friends.
So, what is Runes of Lakkara exactly?
Runes of Lakkara is a story following the hero, Grant, who is involved in a car crash and awakens in a fantasy world set against the back drop of the country, Premania. Grant struggles to get a grip on reality, confused as to what is real and what is fantasy in a world where magic and swords are as common as a smartphone in 2024. Grant is set a quest in which the king of the land reveals Grant to be somewhat of a legend of the continent, but suffering from a case of mistaken identity, sets off to round up a band of familiar heroes to help him.
How does reality cross with a world of magic?
The idea of crossing what we deem reality, with our computers and vehicles, with a world of magic and heroes isn't a new concept but let's talk about those influences. The concept of the crossover came from the tv series Life on Mars, where Metropolitan detective played by John Simms, fell in to a coma and awoke in the 1970's. The series plays a big part in the concept of crossing both worlds in parallel, with the hero Grant able to hear the 'real world', the hospital machines and those hoping for his return. The question of, is this character really who they believe themselves to be was really fun and to bring that to a fantasy world, was too big of an idea to pass up.
Why cover so many genres?
A question I'm often is asked is why I have covered three completely different genres. And the answer is simple; I just love to write. I have so many ideas flying around that I feel that while I am developing my career as an author, now is the perfect time to push myself, to try to find what exactly I feel is my voice. I've had too much fun with all of my writing that to flit between them provides opportunity, a chance to showcase what I can do. And ultimately have fun.
Enough, when can we read it!
Runes of Lakkara will be available on 19th April 2025 from various booksellers! Don't worry, all of that will be revealed in due time along with lots of fresh blog posts to talk all things books and writing. There is plenty of time to talk fantasy, so stick around and prepare to land into the world of magic, where dragons hiding terrible secrets.
